Kids are special and there’s nothing like a good old birthday party to show them how cherished and loved they are by their families and little friends. They look forward to it, help with the selection of theme and cake, party favors and all.
For little Adonai Gutierrez, from Woodland, California, his birthday party was no different. He helped his mom plan everything exactly the way he wanted, they set up a large picnic table at his favorite park, brought cupcakes and gift bags and waited for his guests to show up, but aside for a few close family members, no one turned up, leaving him heartbroken, ”Why did I even have a birthday if nobody came”, he said.
His aunt, Melissa Chavez, posted on the Good Neighbors of Woodland Facebook page, asking if people could send birthday wishes and cards to her nephew who had been stood up by his friends on his birthday party.
It didn’t take long for the community to rally and not only send birthday cards to Adonai but also throw him a do-over birthday party, and it wasn’t just like any party! More than 200 people showed up to sing happy birthday and bring gifts, cakes, bouncy houses and everything else a 7-year-old would want for his birthday. They even brought Adonai to the party in a flashy ride!
His mom, Maria Lopez, was touched by how complete strangers cared for her boy. Adonai’s father passed away when he was just over a year old and he’s been bullied at school. Seeing so many people show up to make her son feel special meant the world to her and her family.
As if this special birthday party wasn’t enough, a couple days later, his favorite basketball team, the Sacramento Kings, showed up for a surprise visit with a few players, dancers and the team mascot, bringing him lots of hugs, signed jerseys, clothing, balls and birthday cards signed by every department of the organization.
He loved his amazing party and said it was his favorite birthday yet!
Now Adonai says he’s famous and kids at school started talking to him. He has a renewed confidence and he’s making new friends.
This simple and beautiful act of kindness summarizes the sense of community we all want to have in out towns.
