Disney World is supposed to be the happiest place on earth and for the Gilmour family, it will always be a very magical place.
Tom and Courtney Gilmour have been fostering siblings Janielle and Elijah for the past three years and have been planning to adopt the brother and sister. Right before their trip to Disney World, they found out the adoption hearing date and decided there was no better place to share the news with the kids.
The family vacation included going to the Star Wars Convention and visiting the Disney Park Magic Kingdom. Courtney and Tom thought it would be extra special to get the help of Mickey Mouse to deliver the news of the kids upcoming adoption hearing. They booked a FastPass to meet him and planned to slip him a sign telling the news and the hearing date.
While the kids played nearby, Courtney received the ”I’m celebrating pins”, where you can fill in the reason of your visit. She received four pins and wrote in two of them: ”I’m celebrating adopting our kids” and on the pins intended for the kids she wrote ”I’m celebrating getting adopted.”
Courtney took a picture of the pins and upload it to Twitter, where the Disney World Social Media team was able to jump in and help them make the most of the news reveal.
They quickly arranged a special meet and greet with Mickey, where the kids thought they were getting their books autographed and would take a picture with the famous mouse. They were as happy as one can be playing a card game with Mickey, getting autographs and posing for pictures, until the Park photographer interrupts them saying, ”Our friend Mickey has something very special to share with you guys, ” handing them the adoption day sign Courtney made.
The kids reaction will move you to tears. Leave a box of tissues handy!
Disney offered a special meet and greet with Mickey so he could let them know their adoption date. The kids had no idea any of this was happening. They just thought they were getting their books signed. This went better than we had hoped. They were beyond shocked and we were beyond emotional. The Gilmours just recently uploaded the emotional video, which went viral.
“I shared the video because I want to continue to draw attention to foster care and adoption. Being a former foster child myself and now a foster/adopt mother, it’s very important we don’t forget there is lots of help needed,” she said to Fox 35.
